RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
